On tomorrow's table...

Kudos to Mr. Stroh for making reach for the virtual thesaurus three times during my studies!

After "completing" The One Who Watches From Below (honestly, who really "completes" that one?), the alternate PCs started into this, which is to be happening simultaneously as #81. It's been a while since I've cracked into Harley's works, as many have a one-shot feel for me. I've been waiting to get to a point where I can comfortably run this without scaling it back. #70 is superbly written, and while not a two-month-long dungeon crawl, has plenty of meat to keep me on my toes. If it wraps up tomorrow, the next journey is subject to the players' whims... Will they ditch the big city in search of more subterranean adventure? Or will they pull Paragon, the dragon-prowed ship, out of the docks and head for their homeland?

It's been a month since we last convened, but cooing over the goodies from the box of swag that arrived yesterday should soothe them into a false sense of safety...

The Acolyte Ascension

You may have noticed that Spellburn's Episode 22 is up.

Totally related: "Meet the Band" has a spiffy little write-up (and is more eloquent than when one is put on the spot).

Apparently Gary Con was an audition. Good thing I didn't know; I would've tanked it.

Also related:   {skip this part if you're afraid of me "ruining the magic"}
Yes, I have been known to wear funny clothes and sing in front of people at least once a year. Usually they're complete strangers, and I'm good with that. If they like it, cool! If they smile and walk on, that's cool too. If they hate it, they'll keep walking. It's all good. Performing for friends/peers, on the other hand...I always feel sketchy. Similarly: When recording for Marooned releases, I can do multiple takes until it's right, and then I'm fairly confident in the little shrinkwrap-packaged disc I sell. Live? Not so much. It's difficult to break out of the 'perfectionist' mindset. But, hey -- Michael Curtis is a tall dude, and I can hide behind him for an episode. Right? ;)

One final thought: Dagnabbit. I totally forgot to level up on air!

Thanks for the support, all!

Semiannual check-in

Blog status ~
Gary Con update: in progress
8 2014 Road Crew game session reports: in progress
2 2013 Road Crew game session reports to be revised/unredacted: in progress

Yeah, I suck at this part of the DCC awesomeness this year.

Meatspace status ~
Despite needing to postpone the regularly-scheduled game due to - of all things - Mother's Day, all sorts of creative stuff is in the works in this corner. Including a photo shoot that made me feel like I was 14 again. And potentially running a home game for the first time in nearly two years. I may also foray into the online medium in the near future (via Roll20), which will be a first. Had to procure a new headset for a number of projects anyway, so I may as well have fun with it, right?

In lieu of blog posts listing the first 8 World Tour appearances on the 2014 Road Crew, here's a list of the modules the open table has gotten through:

playtest: To Forge a Ring / The Making of the Ghost Ring (official name TBD)
- #80.5: Glipkerio's Gambit
- #69: The Emerald Enchanter
- #81: The One Who Watches From Below
- #70: Jewels of the Carnifex {in progress} (takes place simultaneously with #81, using alternate PCs)

I won't say what I've got in mind for them next, but they may be taken back to open water...

Still a bit torn about splitting the table. It makes it tough to have an "open table" when there are 9-10 players already seated; it has to be daunting for others to even approach. I may have the regular players put in a vote about changing the nomenclature this summer and closing the table. A large group is certainly a different dynamic and takes a lot of patience from both players and Judge, but without the right mix, a small table can be just as exhausting. {insert Jeopardy theme here}

Game on!

In the meantime... More DCC RPG!

Hey, no posts lately. What gives? Don't worry, I'm not slackin' over here. This Sunday will be my 6th appearance on the DCC RPG 2014 World Tour.

Speaking of the Road Crew, did you know you can get the swag even if you're not running a game at a brick-and-mortar store? For just another 8 days, the DCC World Tour 2014 Kickstarter has all sorts of nifty stuff. I've already earned a handful of this stuff, but I need at least one of everything. (We've covered the whole "completist" angle earlier.) It's been nearly a year of holding open tables, so I doubt I'm going to run out of people upon whom I may bestow extra swag. And rumor has it we may be able to order a few key items a la carte in a couple of months...

So... Yeah. Six games in already.  And I don't Judge at cons.

But time to do the post-game write-ups? I've got a number of drafts in the works, but "free time" is a little hard to come by these days.

The chimera that is Real Life has reared its loathsome, fugly heads over the past three months, in the forms of the final phase of a client's sales tax audit, 1099 season, unexpected surgery for hubby, and the beginnings of tax season.  And yet, even amid this craptastic quarter of a year, I've continued to hold the open table DCC games on a biweekly basis. Before Christmas, the group began a large playtest, which concluded right after New Year's. They then hopped into the Road Crew special release, Glipkerio's Gambit, and that took them a pair of sessions to complete. We didn't even pause during the hubby's recuperative phase, and I suspect that move took more out of me than him.

In related news: The table has gotten stupidly large. And just this side of manageable. This weekend marks their 3rd session of an adventure I've been trying not to publicize, just so they don't look up spoilers.* Last date we had 9 players + me.  Three of them were brand new to DCC. And during one of the combats, a couple of the more experienced players took time between their initiatives to sell another guy who just wandered into the store onto DCC RPG. He walked out with the Easley cover [clearing the FLGS's shelf] and he'll be my 10th player this week. I am both proud and shaking in my boots.

Based on the sheer numbers, +Troy Tucker and I have bandied about keeping a regular DCC Day on the schedule and splitting the table. The next normally-scheduled game day falls during Gary Con, so I'll finally be missing one, but rather than cancel the entire day, I'm kinda hoping Troy takes over.

Also in the list of links I must provide:
-One of my birfday presents was just what I wanted: a fillable versions of the decorated character sheets. Of course, as a good little Acolyte, I had to share...and Goodman now has the link up for all to partake.
-Another goodie, recently unearthed: a fillable sheet for those creating their own Mighty Deeds of Arms.

Now, at this point, I could probably type an entire novella on how much we're looking forward to Gary Con, but it's already dark and I just started a pot of coffee to get some client crap off the desk and focus on the finale of Sunday's game. So -- we'll see you up in Lake Geneva, if you don't see us first!

*It's #69 if my fellow Judges are interested.

Dice Musings & Inventory

~ Musings on Dice Snobbery (with lots of links) ~

Despite gaming for a couple decades, my first con was just over 10 years ago.  At Gen Con SoCal, back in 2003, there were two primary dice vendors. One of them [Chessex] looked at me sideways when I tried to get assistance in finding a particular die I needed to fill in a set, and went back to dealing with all the guys crowding around and throwing him money. The other [Crystal Caste] greeted me by asking where I'd found a particular costume piece*, and went on to teach me the names of their product lines. Awesome customer service hooked me in. Name recognition and wholesale/reciprocal pricing throughout the following decade has kept their name first on my go-to list. They're also the first responder to calls for prize support, no matter how small the event, and we all know that FREE dice are even better.  Doesn't hurt that they're pretty, too.

*Performing, not cosplay. If I haven't already gone into that in this medium, I'll do so later. Priorities, y'all.

Everyone's got their own aesthetic preference. I happen to prefer the placement & font of the numbering of Crystal Caste's Fantasy dice. I still think their d3s and d30s are the best I've come across (example of d3 included in this sale) and I have been collecting them for years...long before ever hearing those "dee see see" initials that started this latest downward spiral.

The offerings from GameScience on the d3 end are similar, but if you need a die to help you with Rock-Paper-Scissors... well, I got nothin'.  And while my feelings on GS** have been loud and clear among the G+ crowd, I will say that most of the Zocchi set is pretty cool, but I can't in good conscience give them money for a full complementing set when every other die I put my hands on at the booth has drastic imperfections from the mould.

**When I sent a complaint after inking in a set that became illegible due to all the strands of hair that'd been swirled across entire dice mould, their response was to send me a pre-inked set. Hmm.

Thus continues the woes of buying items online... I really "needed" a d7, and heard that Koplow carries them. Oh. They're ... kinda d7s. They're d14s, numbered twice. If I'd wanted that, I would've used a d14 I already had. And they're stupidly Sputnik huge. Especially for travelling, when space is at a premium. (I've considered tossing them into the cats' toy bin -- certainly no choking hazards here.)  But their d24s aren't bad. They're just a tad larger than the GameScience flavor, and easier to read.  The d30 is on the large side, but is still dwarfed by the d7.

This past year at Gen Con, we were lucky enough to stumble upon the Impact! Miniatures booth, where we scored a few spherical versions of the d5, d7, and d14, as well as a few additional flavors that I bought on the base principle of, "WHY don't I have these yet??" I'll make a use for them in my game! I often don't agree that certain actions are worthy of a full slide on the dice chain from d20 to d16. Now there's a d18! Fixed it! Or, for a slight bonus without going the generic "+2 to your roll" route, roll this d22!

...As an aside, I find it very interesting that, if you're looking for a particular die type but aren't picky about the manufacturer, GameStation will sell you exactly that. Very few of the listings include the manufacturer's name, and I don't recommend trying to search by company or product line -- although you might get lucky if a tag is included in the picture.

~ On to the inventory...

Nearly a week ago, the Kickstarter for Impact! Miniatures' full DCC RPG dice set went live. The community has been all a-buzz about it. I've been procrastinating on backing this one, because I picked up a couple handfuls of the odd ones at Gen Con, and they're all set to match the basic coloring from Chessex -- and as it's no secret that Crystal Caste holds my heart in this field, I'm loathe to give Chessex money to get a complete set.  But wait! One of the Kickstarter offerings is a full set, complete with all the funky numbers in DCC's dice chain, and then some!  Problem solved, right?  Well, before I could figure out how many picks to sign up for***, I had to lay everything out and see which sets/colors/lines I need to fill in, and that would give me a better idea of how much money to pledge to this cause!

***Kickstarter speak

However, I'll admit to being flummoxed at the 6-sided "d3". If I wanted to roll a 6-sider for a d3 roll, I'd roll a d6 and do math. But since real 3-sided dice are available, I don't get why you wouldn't use them. To add more cubes to my dice bag just seems unnecessarily confusing.

Which brings us to our collective.

I used to borrow dice from the hubby...now mine outnumber his by 100. And since I wanted a full count of each die type, I split up my sets (regrettable afterward, but it was a learning experience).

This also taught me that (a) I need more red funky dice; (b) I just plain need MORE funky dice {gotta keep loaners for the table in mind, after all}; (c) being married to a completeist has severely warped my sense of collecting; and (d) I need to place some orders with both CC and Impact to fill in the blank spots NOW, in addition to this Kickstarter. Who says I have to wait until Gen Con or the October KS delivery date?

Hmm.

Hi, I'm Jen, and I ... well... I might need help.

But keep your damn paws off my dice.

{{Caveats an' legal stuff: This post is not a paid advertisement, nor is it meant to suggest purchase of any sort... Well, except in the case of the Kickstarter link. Other links are provided as references for visual comparisons.}}
